One of the oldest cities in the world to be continually inhabited, life and death exist on the streets in Varanasi. With over 2000 temples, this is the ‘India’ of your imagination. Sadhus (Hindu holy men), religious pilgrims, and countless cows line the streets, the scent of sandalwood fills the air, and the sound of bells, chanting, and religious mantras your ears. Most notably at the evening Ganga Aarti along the Dashashwamedh Ghat. Love it or loathe it, Varanasi will not fail to make an impression. Visit during the months of October and March, or during any Hindu festival, when celebrations will be at their most fervent.
