Agra

A four-hour drive south of Delhi, even if you’re not familiar with the 16th-century city of Agra, you will be with what it is most famous for: The Taj Mahal. Built by the then Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, in honour of his (favourite) wife, Mumtaz after her death during childbirth. This age-old monument to love, it truly has to be seen to be believed, though this is best done in the early mornings, to avoid the swarming crowds. An hour’s drive west will take you to Fatehpur Sikri, the former capital of Mughal India, another must visit. Travel during the months of October to March for the best weather.
