Odisha

South of Kolkata, overlooking The Bay of Bengal, you will be well-rewarded if you take a turn off India’s tourist trail and make a trip to Odisha. Its capital, Bhubaneswar, is famed for its intricate patchwork of archaeological wonders, the 11th-century Mukteshvara. The entire state is set against a backdrop of incredible natural beauty, including Puri Beach, and its 13th-century Konark Sun Temple. Its forests are home to the state’s native tribal communities, who are responsible for the colourful textiles, and jewellery, for which it is known. Best visited between October and March.
